GSM Protocol Stack for DSP-FPGA Architectures

Features

  • Implements ETSI GSM recommendations
  • Allows BTS emulation and establishing basic calls
  • Targetted at the Lyrtech SFF SDR development platlform
  • The code is not OS specific
  • The code runs on the platform's DSP, but can as easily be distributed between the DSP and GPP
  • Uses Lyrtech C64x assembler-coded GSM voice coding libraries
  • Can easily be retargetted at other FPGAs

Description

The Lyrtech GSM protocol stack is a GSM solution targetted at hybrid DSP-FPGA architectures. The protocol stack and application-specific reference designs (such as the Lyrtech GSM wireless BTS reference design) can be demonstrated on Lyrtech's SFF SDR Development Platforms. The protocol stack can also easily be ported and retargetted to any customer-specific application or hardware.

Layer-1 baseband processing is performed by the DSP using the protocol stack and DSP libraries, while IF and burst processing are performed by the FPGA. Layer-2 and Layer-3 event-driven code mainly runs on the DSP, while top-layer services can be targetted at the GPP (running popular OSs such as the INTEGRITY RTOS or Microsoft Windows Mobile).

Advantages

  • Light - Uses very little OS services and memory.
  • Flexible - Easy to modify and configure to operate in non-standard modes.
  • DSP-FPGA implementation - Allows user to programme with ease, even at the IF processing level (in the FPGA), making it possible to support next-generation features such as Evolved EDGE.
  • Model-based design FPGA implementation - Makes it easier to design custom functional blocks or to re-use off-the-shelf/predeveloped ones. With the Lyrtech Model-based design kit, users can perform in-circuit testing at system level, and then perform HIL co-simulations of their designs to varify final, real-time implementations.
  • Quicker time to market - Use the Lyrtech GSM wireless BTS reference design as a proof of concept and base board in developing custom GSM devices. You can also call upon Lyrtech's experienced engineering teams to help to design solutions that suit your needs. In-house design-for-manufacturing (DFM) expertise is also available.
